Fashion Club President John Scarretti
Club News, Stay Inspired

How I’m Staying Inspired: John Sciarretti

By Harriet Grant · On May 20, 2020

This FC President and his club are making face masks.

FIDM Fashion Club President John Sciarretti of Baldwin High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania shares how he’s staying inspired during the coronavirus pandemic.

How are you personally staying inspired right now? By trying to meet my goal of making 300 masks, personally. I have also made sure to take some time to practice pattern making, sketching, and working on sewing some garments.

You made the local news thanks to your efforts. How did making masks come about? The Fashion Club and I all decided we wanted to help our community in this time of need. We also teamed up with other clubs from school like National Art Honor Society to get a few more recruits to make masks. Eventually our story got shared. We now have 15 of us working independently at home making masks for our community. This was all set up in the matter of a week, and some other school districts in our area are even following in our footsteps! We hope that other FIDM Fashion Clubs hope to do the same for their communities because we are all stronger together.

Are there specific brands or personalities you admire who are showing leadership during this health crisis? I really admire how famous designers such as Christian Siriano and Bishme Cromartie have been donating their time and resources to make masks for the medical community. It is really inspiring that they are able to get masks made for the doctors that desperately need them, which is one of the reasons our club decided to help out.

Do you have any tips for staying connected with fellow members during this challenging time? My advice for all FIDM Fashion Clubs is to stay connected on all forms of social media such as Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and TikTok. We also made a Google Classroom for our club so we can all post and share information regarding meetings and events that take place. In addition, we always share style ideas, sewing projects, makeup tutorials, etc., so that everyone can have some form of motivation while we are at home.
