Shortridge Magnet HS FIDM Fashion Club Participates in Walking Masterpiece Show

By Harriet Grant · On January 28, 2020

They debuted designs at an art and fashion event!

We caught up with Shortridge Magnet High School FIDM Fashion Club President Chase Cooper to hear the latest!

How did participation in your school’s Walking Masterpiece Show come about?
I was a past participant and I thought it’d be cool to introduce some type of tradition to the club that we’d look forward to every year and members were motivated by it. My friend and fellow member, who modeled my piece from last year, even created her own. It was hosted on campus at my school’s special auditorium where lots of other artistic events take place and there were three pieces designed by FIDM Fashion Club members. Most materials to make the central costume came from recycled materials like old jeans, trash bags, paper plates, and sheets. Some accessories were handmade. Everything varied with each person’s piece.

What was the reaction to these creative pieces?
The reaction to this event and each member’s piece was very exciting. Lots of parents, teachers, and members of the club were present at the event, which allowed us to have more support no matter who made what. People were looking forward to what the club had to offer since it was something new to the school. This show was our very first pop of who we are, what we make, and what talent we could bring to the stage, and from that there was lots of good feedback on the social media pages of the creators.

Why did you start your FIDM Fashion Club?
I have been interested in FIDM since my freshman year when I attended a college fair. Ever since it became one of my top schools and creating the club offered me a challenge to do something I was interested in that also brought something new to my school environment.

How do you recruit members?
I made it known that whoever was interested in coming was invited even if they didn’t know anything about fashion. Most members came from an art class or were referred by a teacher promoting it to students interested in art or fashion. A big way we advertised were flyers placed throughout the school so students could get info quickly about the club.

What other plans do you have for your club?
My plans for the club include creative fundraising for holidays, a spring fashion show in April, and an end-of-the-year trip to Chicago where we plan to see an actual fashion show so we can see what it’s like in the industry. Most of our meetings have included having speakers or fun activities, but now that we’re getting closer to the end of the year more of our work from the past is going into our biggest event which is the show coming up.
